Cutting Machine and Rail Setup Procedure

Print Print
  • Purpose Statement
  1. Define a procedure to achieve consistency in all machine and rail setups during initial building steps
  • Scope
  1. All ESAB Gantry Type Cutting machines with square rails.
  • References

  2. Machine Installation Drawings
  • Procedure
  1. Set up and level the rails to the correct dimension.
    1. This should include rail gauge, straightness, level, etc. per our published installation drawings.
    2. When leveling the rail, use the line level (six-inch precision) to ensure the roll on the rail is zero (rail is level side to side).
  2. Set wheels and axles in trucks to center of wheel opening.
  3. Assemble the side bearings on both sides of both trucks.
  4. Set "X" and "W" axis trucks on rails.
  5. Set beam in place and bolt down.
  6. Set deck in place but do not bolt down.
  7. Adjust the guide eccentric bearings on rails using .003 shim.
  8. Set the rail gauge using the X-fixed guide bearing centerline to the W-eccentric guide bearing centerline to within 1/64". (Front & Rear)
  9. Perform preliminary squaring by drawing Four Corners.
  10. Square the Y-axis rails to the X-rail within 1/64" across the entire width of the beam. This can be interpolated using trigonometry and the measurements of the diagonals from the largest possible square drawing.
  11. Level the Y-axis rail.
  12. Install Dial Indicators to monitor "W" truck (use the cover bolts to secure the indicators and dial in zero on indicators).
  13. Remove the extra fixed bearings on the "W" truck.
  14. Adjust the deck as close as possible to the beam.
  15. Never force the deck in place. If bolts do not line up then re-drill holes in deck to match.
  16. Insert bolts to secure deck but do not tighten.
  17. Shim the distance between deck and beam.
  18. Tighten bolts using shims so beam does not move.
  19. Bolt deck to the trucks. If bolts do not line up then re-drill holes in deck to match.
